Post-Surgical Instructions for Gingivectomy
Following this procedure we have two main objectives. To ensure that you remain comfortable as your mouth heals. Also,to provide detailed information to obtain the best results possible.
Homecare:
Please take Ibuprophen, Advil or Motrin at 800mg (equal to 4 small 200mg tabs over the counter) as needed 2-3 days. As an alternative Tylenol 1000mg can be used, take as directed. A prescription mouthwash Peridex has been provided, use for two weeks.
The morning following the surgery remove the periodontal bandage and begin warm salt-water rinses. Rinse with ½ teaspoon of salt in 8-10 ozs of warm water dissolve. Then gently (swish) the surgical site 2-3 times daily, especially after meals. This solution will prevent bacteria from accumulating. Brush the brackets and wire, do not brush the gum tissue at this time. Continue to perform normal oral hygiene in the rest of the mouth. Eat a soft, high protein diet and stay hydrated.
Day 5 and Beyond:
If sutures were placed they should have resorbed by this time. You may begin gentle gingival stimulation, with the soft bristle Toothbrush provided. Use the Bass Technique for brushing as shown in the video below. As the tissue healing continues, at two weeks out, there should not be any redness or any signs of inflammation.
If at any point there are any concerns or questions please contact the office (770) 465-3929.
Bass Brushing Technique
The ADA-recommended Bass brushing technique (or sulcular brushing) is a highly effective, method that focuses on removing plaque from beneath the gum line to prevent periodontal disease.

Key Steps for the Bass Method
•Angle the Brush: Position the toothbrush bristles at a 45-degree angle to the tooth surface, aimed directly at the gum line.
•Gentle Vibration: Apply slight pressure so the bristles enter the sulcus (the tiny space between the tooth and gum) and use small, gentle, back-and-forth, or vibratory motions.
•Short Strokes: Focus on 2–3 teeth at a time, performing about 10–15 short strokes per area.
•Sweep Away: Follow the vibration with a sweeping stroke away from the gum line, pulling debris away.
•Clean All Surfaces: Repeat this process on the outer surfaces, inner surfaces, and chewing surfaces of all teeth.
•Vertical Position: For the front inside surfaces, hold the brush vertically and make several up-and-down strokes.
•Time it: Brush for a total of two minutes, twice daily
